Gunfire Erupts at Howe Park Injures Multiple Gunshot Victims in the Arden-Arcade Section of Sacramento County

Officials in Sacramento County are examining a shooting that unfolded on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time law enforcement were breaking up a large unsanctioned party of hundreds of attendees.

Prior to the Shooting

Law enforcement first arrived at Howe Park just after 6:30 PM on April 18 after getting calls of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made about a potential altercation happening inside the park.

Aerial units searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Despite this, it was apparent that several hundred individuals had come together at the location without permission.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies moved to clear the area by setting up around the park's perimeter and making announcements directing the crowd to disperse at once. Roughly 15 minutes were allowed for the gathering to break up.

As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition rang out. Gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Deputies swiftly started identifying shooting victims.

Four People Shot

When the dust settled, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each apparently in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Hospital staff reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one had injuries classified as minor. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department were called to the scene and helped triage those who had been shot on location.

Physical Evidence

The bulk of the shooting appears to have happened on the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives recovered extra shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Projectile impacts were observed in the wrought iron perimeter fencing adjacent to the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence pointed to that at least one shooter had been firing southward from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. The store itself was secured under a brief lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.

Suspect Information

Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic confirmed that a suspect Kia had been stopped in Solano County. Four detainees Sacramento County Sheriff shooting investigation were stopped and detained. Law enforcement units were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for processing in Sacramento County. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two individuals had fired weapons.
